Nitrogen management in southeast Minnesota meetings set for March 2 & 3
A multitude of issues related to nitrates in water in southeast Minnesota have come to the forefront over the past few years. This has led to a reexamination of how nitrogen fertilizer and manure are managed in the region. University of Minnesota Extension is hosting two meetings for farmers and those involved in agriculture to discuss the current situation.
The first meeting is in Fountain, Minn. on Monday, March 2, and the second meeting is in Zumbrota, Minn. on Tuesday, March 3.
Topics covered include:
· An update on the current regulatory and policy situation
· How nitrogen behaves in the environment and how it gets into water
· The dynamics of groundwater recharge in southeast Minnesota
· Best management practices for both commercial fertilizer and manure, based on local research
· On-farm nitrogen management research results in southeast Minnesota
The meetings will take place at the Community Center in Fountain, and the VFW in Zumbrota, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the program starting at 9:00 a.m. A noon lunch will be provided for attendees, and therefore pre-registration is requested. There will be no charge for this meeting or for lunch thanks to support from Minnesota Corn.
Additional information and pre-registration can be found at: z.umn.edu/NitrogenSmart or by contacting your local SWCD.
